The Love Bible Counselling Team (LBC) conducted a six-week biblical parenting seminar from October 11 to November 15, 2025, with 37 missionaries from North America, South America, Korea, and Japan participating. Mary Cowen (D.Ed.Min. in biblical counseling, 2025) led the seminar, which featured lectures by various missionaries and breakout sessions.

Lecturers were Deborah Kim (Campinas, Brazil), Peter Lim (New Jersey), Grace Sun Lee (Chicago), Grace Kim (Cleveland), and Mary Cowen (Chicago). Breakout sessions were led by Esther Yoon (Atlanta), Steven Yang & Grace Yang (Raleigh), Deborah Kim, Grace Sun Lee, Grace Kim, and Mary Cho (Argentina).
The parenting seminar was based on the SURE Model, a framework of four essential elements for ministry relationships and biblical discipleship that the LBC team has developed and practised. The SURE model is based on Ephesians 4:32, highlighting ‘sustaining love, holistic understanding, reconciliation through the gospel, and engaging in change and growth.’ “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Eph 4:32). Participants gained perspective on parenting as a journey of sanctification shaped by the gospel and prayed earnestly for their children. Through the seminar, learning and sharing encompassed diverse insights:

Key themes included a biblical view of parents and children (The 3 Ss-sufferers, sinners, saints), the challenges faced by suffering parents, and the hope and comfort in God.

Biblical parental roles and the principles of discipline.

Understanding Third Culture Kids and emphasised the importance of parents' self-care, especially when cultural and experiential differences contribute to parent-child conflict.

Provoking parents, expressing repentance and faith in the gospel, forgiveness, a renewal of the heart.

Restoration of relationships with children through forgiveness, putting off the old self, and putting on the new self.

Addressing addiction issues biblically and finding the path to restoration as a worshipper.

The praying parents, the prayerful and loving support of the UBF community of faith, and other caring teams.
The seminar concluded with all attendees sharing their reflections of repentance and gratitude for the work of the Word and the Holy Spirit in their hearts, lives, and children, followed by prayer.

One missionary family confessed that after studying biblical counseling for three years and experiencing inner transformation, they consistently served their child through the word of God and prayer. They experienced a new beginning in Jesus in the heart of their child. The parents confessed that God desires to bring about repentance through parenting the child, purifying them, and molding them into the image of Jesus Christ as they wholeheartedly love and worship God alone.

Another missionary shared that through the grace of the gospel, repentance, and learning Christ-like humility, she bore fruit, leading to the restoration of the relationship with her adult child. She resolved to bring all their burdens to God, who does good work according to His good plans in her child. She was full of thanksgiving, believing in God's sanctifying work in parenting.

When my children faced suffering and sin, I was filled with anxiety. When I repented of unbelief and the heart idol of control and trusted in God, the perfectParent, I could entrust my children to Him. The gospel of the cross and resurrection leads parents and children on a journey of salvation and sanctification. I give thanks that within Christ's body, God works through His Word and by the Holy Spirit. I am confident that the faithful God will provide a way to help my children through any difficult situation (1 Corinthians 10:13).

이 자녀 양육 세미나는 LBC 팀이 개발하고 실천해 온 SURE 모델을 기반으로 진행되었습니다. SURE 모델은 사역 관계와 성경적 제자도를 위한 네 가지 핵심 요소로 구성된 체계입니다. 에베소서 4장 32절에 근거한 SURE 모델을 바탕으로, 지속적인 사랑, 전인적 이해, 복음을 통한 화해, 변화와 성장을 위한 참여를 강조했습니다. “서로 친절하게 대하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라” (엡 4:32). 참가자들은 자녀 양육을 복음으로 빚어지는 부모의 성화의 여정으로 바라볼수 있었으며 자녀들을 위해 간절히 기도 습니다. 세미나를 통해 배움과 나눔은:

부모와 자녀에 대한 성경적 인간관 (The 3Ss: 고통받는 자, 죄인, 의인).

고통받는 부모와 그들을 위한 하나님의 위로와 소망.

성경적인 부모 역할과 훈육의 원칙 제 3문화 아이들 이해하기 (부모-자녀 갈등이 아시아 문화적 양육 가치관과 제3문화 아이들의 독특한 경험으로 인한 오해와 불신에서 비롯될 때, 부모의 자가 상담이 특히 중요함).

자녀를 분노하게 하는 부모, 복음앞에 회개와 믿음의 고백, 용서, 마음의 새로와짐.

용서를 통한 자녀와의 관계 회복, 옛사람벗고 새사람입기.

중독문제를 성경적으로 풀고 예배자로서의 회복의 방향.

기도하는 부모, 소속된 UBF 신앙의 공동체와 돌보는 팀들의 뒷받침등 다양한 배움이었읍니다.
세미나는 모든 참석자의 마음과 삶과 자녀들 안에, 말씀과 성령의 역사하심에 대한 회개와 감사의 소감 나누기와 기도로 마무리되었습니다.

한 선교사 가정은 3년 동안 성경적 상담을 공부하며 내적 변화를 갖고 말씀과 기도로 자녀를 꾸준히 섬길때 부모와 자녀안에 예수님안에서 새로운 시작을 경험했다고 고백했습니다. 하나님께서는 자녀를 통해 회개하게 하시고 정결하게 하시며 하나님 한분을 전심으로 사랑하고 예배드리며 예수그리스도의 형상으로 빚어가기를 원하신다고 고백했습니다.

다른 선교사는 복음의 은혜로 회개와 그리스도의 겸손이 열매 맺어 성인 자녀와의 관계가 새롭게 회복되었다고 나누었습니다. 선한 계획을 가지시고 일하고 계시는 하나님께 마음의 짐을 모두 맡기겠다고 다짐짐했습니다. 자녀 양육 성화하게 하시는 것을 믿고 감사가 충만만하였습니다.

자녀들이 고통과 죄문제가 있을때 저는 노심초사했습니다. 불신과 통제 (콘트롤)라는 마음의 우상을 회개하고 완전하신 부모이신 하나님을 신뢰할 때, 저는 자녀들을 그분께 맡길 수 있었습니다. 십자가와 부활의 복음은 부모와 자녀를 구원과 성화의 여정으로 인도하십니다. 그리스도의 몸 안에서 그분의 말씀으로 성령으로 일하심을 감사합니다다. 신실하신 하나님께서 어떤 어려운 상황에서도 자녀들을 도울 길을 마련해 주실 것을 확신합니다 (고린도전서 10:13).
